A leader's perspective...

The temperature is climbing toward 50 degrees Celsius (122 F) as I make my way toward Lyabi-Hauz, the reservoir in the centre of Bukhara. I duck between the archways of the caravanserai and as I emerge into the wide open expanse of the square, I make a beeline for the trees surrounding the water. Under each tree is a large platform seat, catering to old men who gather in the cooler shade to play cards, chat and sip tea. It’s the local children who still have energy to spare. They take great delight in climbing up the trees and jumping off into the pool below – they begin to show off once they realise there is an audience, the competition seeming to be who can make the biggest splash and get me wet!
