Welkom in Nederland! “Yes, I’ve been to Amsterdam!” That’s probably a common answer when asking someone if they have been to The Netherlands. Tulips and canals are a typical cliché of Amsterdam, but there is more to this stunning city than meets the eye. Marvel at old gabled houses, admire masterpieces by Van Gogh and join the friendly locals for a drink or a plate of bitterballen at the many pavement cafes. Venture out into the Dutch countryside where you will find a totally different face to this fascinating country. Wide open spaces and beautiful landscapes are best explored by bicycle. Don’t be surprised if you end up singing and dancing at a local music festival in one of the many picturesque villages – I did!

Picture perfect Amsterdam
Being enticed by Amsterdam's special cookies seems such a waste - you’ll need to have a clear head to make the most of your time. There are endless things to do in this charismatic city of canals and cycles, so here’s a tip for a must-see that goes hand in hand with soaking up the atmosphere of this culturally rich capital. You simply must visit the museum of one of the Netherland’s most famous sons, Vincent Van Gogh. The Van Gogh Museum houses not only paintings that illustrate the life, loves and inner struggles of this great 19th century artist, it also displays works by other artists of the same period. The opportunity to view the charcoal sketches that led to the colourful creations is enthralling even if you are not an art buff and with new exhibitions always on display you’ll be eager to visit each time you’re in Amsterdam.
Painting Van Gogh
I had a print of Van Gogh's Sunflowers on my kitchen wall so it was really enjoyable to finally see the original. It is definitely a must see, seeing as it is one of the most famous painting in all of the Netherlands. I took my time round the museum till I finally arrived at Sunflowers and I was surprised to see no-one hovering around it. It was a really great opportunity for me to make a few sketches to hang next to my copy in the kitchen. It is not every day I get to sketch from the original masterpieces of Van Gogh. I gave one to my daughter when I got back home and she loved it.
