employment conditions

initial placement

In most instances we'll be able to tell you the specifics of when and where you will commence working. Occasionally we may ask trainees to join training now but start work a few months down the track.

Be aware: For ex-patriot leaders we try to place you in your region of preference - this is important both for your enjoyment & for your enthusiasm in leading trips. However changing customer demands and world events outside our control may mean we need to you to work somewhere else. This can occur both initially and even during a contract period. Your Operations Manager would discuss changes with you. Note that leaders are not able to choose which trips they lead and must be open to leading all styles of trip from our Basix style through to Family and Active trips.

employment contract

You will receive your Employment Contract when you have successfully completed your training. Note that due to local employment laws, contracts and rates of pay can vary between regions.

probation

Your initial contract will state you are on probation. Following satisfactory performance (see Performance Reviews below) your employment will be confirmed. If your performance is unsatisfactory we will end the contract.

$$ remuneration

Your remuneration package will consist of either a daily rate or fixed salary and is calculated to allow for the fact you are working away from home. Subject to performance you may also be entitled to receive an annual bonus.

Whilst leading trips your accommodation is included in the trip costs.

While this is not a high paying job, most leaders find the wage is sufficient for their daily needs. It is important to note that people with a mortgage to pay or other substantial financial commitments may struggle to meet their needs.

Working as a Group Leader purely for financial reward or the belief that you are being 'paid to travel' is a misconception. Rather, wanting to share our adventures, be challenged every day and give our travellers the best possible experience is what Group Leading with Intrepid is all about.

Intrepid has a strict policy banning leaders in accepting cash commissions.

performance reviews and performance pay bonuses

At end of your probation and throughout your contract, you will be rated on performance in 4 key areas:

  • Passenger feedback
  • Administration & Accounts
  • Co-operation & teamwork
  • Responsible Travel

You are expected to make an ongoing commitment to increasing your knowledge of local history, culture, language, current affairs, flora and fauna, customs, religions, geography, economics - for your own enjoyment and to benefit your passengers and fellow leaders! This will undoubtedly help you continuously improve your performance ratings.

renewal of contract

Most Group Leaders continue leading for several years, with the record to date being more than 10 years! We are keen for all our good leaders to renew their contracts beyond the initial period, and start discussing their future plans with them 3-4 months before their contract finishes, to help everyone's planning.

ending contracts

When you decide that it is time to stop leading trips, it is important that you give Intrepid as much notice as possible. Three months notice is the minimum, as Intrepid needs to recruit and train a new leader. In reality our leaders are continually talking to us about their future; where they may like to lead trips in the future, if they would like a break from leading for a few months or that they might finish up in 12 months time. This communication is important for our planning and in no way affects the relationship between the individual and Intrepid.
